Video: A 1,000-HP BMW M5 goes up against rally cars

The CarWOW team on YouTube has arranged a race between a seriously tuned BMW M5 and three completely different rally cars from various eras. One of them exploded!

Starting with the rivals, the first one is a Mini Cooper WRC AWD packing a 2.0-liter turbo-four mill, 600 PS (592 hp / 441 kW) and 1,000 Nm (738 lb-ft) of torque. Prices begin from £600,000.

The previous-gen Ford Fiesta BRC has the same displacement volume, but costs roughly a fourth of the above amount (£150,000) and churns out 550 PS (542 hp / 404 kW) along with 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) at most.

The mid-engined Ford RS200 emerged back in mid-1980s as a Group B rally car, but still manages to amaze this day due to its 2.1-liter turbo four-pot pumping out 500 PS (493 hp / 368 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque. Add to it a purpose-built AWD system and a glass-fiber plastic body, and you get plenty for your £400,000.

For its part, the BMW F90 M5 makes use of an Evolve upgrade kit that lifts the output of its 4.4-liter V8 TT to 1,000 PS (986 hp / 735 kW). It is also the most affordable of the bunch at £120,000. It also packs an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the rival trio irelies on serial stick shift. The main downside is the weight: at around 2 metric tons (4,400 lbs), the Bavarian sedan weighs roughly 700 kg (1,540 lbs) above the competition.

Watch the video, but be prepared to see the RS200 engine explode after the first successful race. This and the rain prevented all tests from going according to schedule, but the results are impressive nonetheless.
