Watch an older BMW M5 pressure-blasted with dry ice and repainted

Few BMW 5-Series models are so unanimously considered iconic as the gorgeous E39 M5. The luxury sedan hit the market in the distant 1998, but you can still encounter it on the streets in top condition thanks to caring owners – like this one.

U.S.-based company I AM Detailing perfected the paint on this particular example. The 8-minute-long video contains many interesting observations about the process, but dry ice blasting to remove dirt has to be our favorite. Dry ice particles are being sprayed on the body and the underside of the M5 with significant pressure, causing them to burst into gas at the impact. Apparently, this approach helps eliminate traces of dirt in the most challenging places.

Once finished with the blasting, the team proceeds to buff out the body and polish over all the tiny scratches. As well, special attention is paid to eliminating the so-called orange peel effect where OEM paint was applied unevenly and formed a palpable texture. Most carmakers, even premium ones, do not consider it a critical production defect, so those with enough taste and money often turn to detailing shops for help.

Rounding things off is a major cleaning of the cabin.
