BMW M5 Touring shows up in official photos

BMW plans to launch a five-door wagon variant of its M5 model next year, even though its sedan counterpart (farther down the gallery here) is nearly done with the pre-production tests. In the meantime, the Bavarian company offers us a preview of the new M5 Touring under wraps.

Based on the three pics available thus far, the next generation brings along pronounced wheel arches, a sloping roof and a rear spoiler. Other than that, the disguise is too thick to draw conclusions.

Per the manufacturer, the new M5 will take advantage of an electrified powertrain. If we had to guess, it could be a dialed-down version of the BMW XM powertrain combining a 4.4-liter V8 with an electric motor. The original one had 748 PS (738 hp / 550 kW) and 1,000 Nm (738 lb-ft) of torque under its command.

The first tests on public roads and the Nürburgring are scheduled to begin in a few days, so we should be able to learn more about the technical specifications soon.

The BMW 5-Series went into its next generation in late May this year. The sedan has transformed drastically inside and out, while the wagon-shaped Touring version has not been revealed yet. The current flagship of the 5-Series lineup is the all-electric i5 M60 saloon running on dual e-motors rated at 601 PS (593 hp / 442 kW) and 820 Nm (610 lb-ft) of torque together.
