BMW M5 Touring spied outside for the first time

BMW has commenced the road tests of its next-generation M5 wagon, Motor1 reports posting some spy shots of what looks like the final production version of the car.

Rumor has it that both M5 variants will not be revealed on official terms until 2024, so let’s have a look while we have the opportunity. Pronounced bumpers and wide wheel arches are immediately noticeable, and a closer inspection reveals a tailgate spoiler along with quad tailpipes. The wheels likely measure 21 inches across, and the side mirrors are M Performance standard. A special radiator grille is also on our list of expectations, complete with aggressive styling and a new pattern.

For the powertrain, the two upcoming M5s may reuse the hybrid system of the BMW XM. The latter consists of a 4.4-liter V8 and an electric motor joining forces for 748 PS (738 hp / 550 kW) and 1,000 Nm (738 lb-ft) of torque. Having said that, the M5 might get dialed down to around 720 PS (710 hp / 530 kW) to distance it from the flagship SUV.
