Rumor: New BMW M5 shapes up stronger than old gen, but not as strong as XM

According to anonymous sources on Bimmer Post, BMW intends to maintain the flagship status of its XM SUV lineup by keeping the new M5 (G90) below it in terms of power. When it goes into production in mid-2024, it will do so with the same powertrain as the XM, but dialed down by 30 horsepower (22 kilowatts).

The rumors claim that the new M5 will output 577 PS (569 hp / 424 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque from its 4.4-liter turbocharged V8. It will allegedly also use an electric motor to add 194 PS (191 hp / 143 kW) and 280 Nm (207 lb-ft) to the total.

Thus, the combined power of the new M5 comes in at 718 PS (708 hp / 528 kW). The XM still reigns supreme with 748 PS (738 hp / 530 kW). The current M5 generation is considerably behind with 635 PS (626 hp / 467 kW) in the top spec.

According to these reports, the battery will also be downsized from the XM’s 25.7 kilowatt-hours to just 18.6. It’s possible but unlikely that BMW wanted to make the new M5 weigh less – it’s still a heavy sedan at 2.5 metric tons (5,500 lbs) of own weight.

There are no range estimates yet. The alleged insider claims the new M5 will be slightly larger than the current generation and will ride on staggered wheels as standard – 20-inch ones at the front and 21-inch ones at the back.

Aside from the G90 sedan, there will be a G99 Touring wagon, the third family car in the entire history of the M5 lineup. There is still no premiere date, but it’s clear that it will be sometime later in 2024.
