BMW has unveiled the fastest version of its compact-sized X1 CUV so far – the M35i xDrive. The main novelty is the 2.0-liter turbo engine considered the marque’s most powerful four-cylinder unit on the lineup.
Compared to the alternatives, the new mill features an optimized turbo setup and oil system, as well as certain internals borrowed from the company’s inline-six units. It produces 300 PS (296 hp / 221 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque in its main European spec. For the United States, the power will be raised to 317 PS (313 hp / 233 kW).
The M35i relies on a seven-speed Steptronic DCT to drive its four wheels through a mechanical limited-slip differential and an AWD system with an electro-hydraulic coupling. Outfitted like this, it reaches 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.4 seconds. The top speed stays capped at 250 km/h (155 mph).
Thanks to new adaptive shocks, the car sits 15 mm (0.6 inches) lower than standard. You can opt for M Compound four-piston brakes and 385mm (15-inch) brake rotors.
Exterior differences include a new radiator grille, a typical M body kit with large air intakes, four exhaust tips grouped by two at the sides of the rear bumper, and special 19-inch wheels. You can also opt for a blackout package called M Shadowline.
The basic trim level includes original upholstery, an M steering wheel and seats with enhanced lateral support. Paying extra unlocks M Sport seats with integrated headrests. For the first time on record, the X1 gets the latest iDrive infotainment system running BMW 9 OS.
Sales in North America will begin in October, followed by Europe in November. Prices in the USA will start from $50,895.
