780 HP, 1,086 Nm: Chip tune squeezes all the juices out of the BMW X3 M

It is general knowledge that the BMW S58 six-pot that the modern X3 M and X4 M come with can output crazy amounts of power when properly tuned. The team over at FF Retrofittings just decided to see how much it would be able to get via ECU tuning means.

The result is quite astonishing: 780 horsepower (582 kilowatts) and up to 1,086 Newton-meters (800 pound-feet) of torque. Truth be told, the tuner has also swapped the stock exhaust system out for the ultra-expensive OPF-free Akrapovic Evolution unit. But even then, hitting the values listed above with the exhaust replacement alone would be out of the question. Everything else, including the downpipe, the turbines and the other hardware, stays stock.

The company emphasizes that the car is still reasonably safe to drive and is subject to hardly any added wear-and-tear. What also makes this project special is that you can choose when to take advantage of the extra thrust. The Eco drive mode keeps the values stock, Comfort raises the power to 630 hp (470 kW), and only Sport/Sport+ unleash the full potential, taking the bulky X3 M from 100 to 200 km/h (62-124 mph) in mere 6.83 seconds.
