BMW to produce its new X3 hybrid in SAR, ship worldwide

Automaker BMW has confirmed that the next generation of the X3 SUV with the plug-in hybrid powertrain will go into production in South Africa next year.

The company says its Rosslyn factory – on upgrading which it plans to spend more than €200,000,000 – will supply the new X3 PHEVs to numerous markets all around the world. The industrial complex in Gauteng Province became BMW’s first production site outside of Europe when it was commissioned more than 50 years ago. By now, it has produced over 1,600,000 vehicles for more than 40 countries, including 14 African ones.

The current, third, generation of the BMW X3 is also being made in the South African Republic. The production began five years ago.

Little is known about the new generation except that the company will want to extend its battery range.
