The performance-oriented BMW X3 M and X4 M crossovers only debuted two years ago, but it looks like the manufacturer will be refreshing them along with the main cast. A facelifted X3 M was spotted testing not long ago, and now, the company has revealed an official video starring both models.
The footage is shot in the same vein as the BMW-themed TV series named The Hire, which first aired two decades ago. The crossovers boast plenty of updated exterior trim as they are driven along night city streets.
The scope of upgrades looks quite modest, but there is no missing the new headlights and bumpers. These correspond to the designs we saw published by the China patent authorities last month.
The infotainment system should definitely get an update – a software one, at any rate. Whether any of the displays will be new remains uncertain. Rumor has it the refreshed 3 Series will get a state-of-the-art curved touchscreen dubbed the iDrive 8, but it won’t happen until at least mid-2022. The i4 and iX electric cars will be the first to take advantage of the new tech when they ship in November. As for the X3 and X4, including their M versions, they should come out sooner than that and therefore ship with the old display tech.
The powertrain specs will also remain unchanged, which means both models will still rely on their inline-six turbo rated at 480 PS (normal) and 510 PS (Competition). Unlike their light passenger car comrades, BMW SUVs have no option to de-couple the front axle and go RWD, however, they have a feature called 4WD Sport that imitates RWD steering to a certain extent.
