BMW trolls Tesla with ‘metal ball-proof’ X5 VR6 windows

The reveal event of the Tesla Cybertruck pickup went on more or less smoothly, but the bit with the allegedly bulletproof glass shattering from a hand-thrown metal ball probably wasn’t the best-looking part. Naturally, some rival carmakers couldn’t resist the temptation.

BMW unveiled its armor-clad X5 Protection VR6 in late summer. The incident with the Cybertruck provided the Bavarian company with a perfect opportunity to remind everyone about the superior protection offered by its SUV. Their latest social media post depicts the SUV with a caption promising ‘splinter protection’ and claiming that ‘its windows can withstand an impact with a metal ball.’ That’s some blatant trolling right there, BMW!

One important thing to note is that the BMW X5 Protection VR6 is several times as expensive as the U.S.-made pickup truck, which starts from $40,000. However, it does offer class-leading ballistic protection. The windows are 33 millimeters (1.3 inches) thick, and the SUV can withstand an air strike equivalent to 200 grams of C4 explosives. The company claims the passengers will survive the blast unharmed.
