BMW stretches the X5 for China

BMW has launched two new versions of its X5 crossover SUV in China. Both are 130 mm (5 inches) longer than the stock car, have the index ‘Li’ in their model name, and come with an extended range of options to suit the tastes of the local clientele.

All the extra length serves to add space to the rear half of the cabin. The rear doors are also stretched to fit. The manufacturer does not specify whether a four-seater may be available in the near future (the current model has a bench in the back).

Both models benefit from comfort-oriented suspension tweaks and electronic shocks. Buyers can even opt for air suspension for both axles.

The xDrive30Li spec comes equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine capable of 272 PS (268 hp / 200 kW). The other one, xDrive40Li, uses a 3.0-liter turbo six-pot that makes 370 PS (365 hp / 272 kW). An eight-speed automatic transmission sends the momentum to all four wheels.

BMW claims it designed ultra-comfortable seats specifically for these cars and made the rear bench back adjustable in four positions. Some M Aero parts are already included in all trim levels, while paying premium nets you a panoramic roof, an atmospheric ambient lighting system and much more.

While the international BMW X5 is made in the United States, the stretched variant will go into production in Shenyang, China, marking the first time a large Bavarian SUV was assembled in that city. The sales will start next month.
