BMW iX5 Hydrogen hits production

A dedicated BMW factory in Munich, Germany has proceeded with the production of a pilot batch of the hydrogen-powered BMW iX5. Only 100 SUVs will be made for testing purposes.

The so-called BMW iX5 Hydrogen runs on pre-facelift X5 underpinnings, hence the somewhat dated looks. Its powertrain incorporates a pair of composite gas cylinders, fuel cell arrays, an electrochemical generator and a traction e-motor rated at 401 PS (396 hp / 295 kW).

Like with most other EVs, the company highlights that the nominal power output is only attainable when the battery is fully charged. The driving range amounts to 504 km (313 miles).

The automaker isn’t ready to talk pricing yet, but rumor has it the iX5 Hydrogen costs more than €100,000. This is substantially more than any other popular fuel-cell EV on the market costs right now: for instance, €66,000 buys you a Toyota Mirai in Germany, while €77,000 gets you a Hyundai Nexo.
