The team of ESC Tuning has shared a video report dedicated to one of its latest projects, a 2006 BMW X5 rebuilt for the latest SEMA show under the name ‘Ultra X5’. As opposed to some SEMA builds that never get the taste of off-roading, this one was actually put through some serious trials in the Mojave Desert.
Texas Speed&Performance supplied the SUV with a custom-built 6.7-liter V8 of unspecified output. What we do know is that the engine links to the wheels by means of a Monster Stage six-speed A/T and a transfer case with a couple of reduction gears inside.
The suspension benefits from robust Ford Super Duty axles and adjustable long-travel shocks from Bilstein. New 17-inch beadlock wheels come wrapped in 40-inch Mickey Thompson Baja Boss tires, and the brakes are reinforced all around. The wheel arches have been cut out to accommodate the larger wheels. Assorted expedition accessories and extra lighting round off the build.
In the video, the SUV manages to overcome most of the obstacles of the rocky desert trail. Check it out for some funny moments and emotional beats when the Ultra X5 crew meets other off-roading enthusiasts along the way. It looks like the day 1 of the trip was the hardest by far, starting with a suspension failure. After some garage repairs, the car was as good as new and could continue the journey.
