BMW X5 gets a special edition for its 25th birthday

To celebrate the BMW X5 (see video) turning a quarter of a century old, BMW North America has launched a limited series called the Silver Anniversary Edition. It is based on the current, fourth generation and will be capped at around 1,000 units for the U.S. market.

The base car is a BMW X5 xDrive40i powered by a petrol turbo-six mill assisted by a 48V starter-generator built into an eight-speed AT. It sends 380 PS (375 hp / 279 kW) to the wheels.

On the outside, the principal differences are a Lime Rock Grey exterior finish from the BMW Individual, blacked-out accents all around and a plaque saying “Silver Anniversary Edition” on the tailgate. The standard 20-inch M Sport wheels feature a two-tone finish and can be optioned with General Grabber off-road tires if you need them.

Trim-wise, there are bucket seats coming in a variety of colors, carbon-fiber bits all around like in the range-topping X5 M60i and X5 M Competition, a special edition plate next to the transmission lever, and all-weather floor mats.

Air suspension, a rear diff lock, skid plates and a slew of electronic aids are already included. The SUV supports dedicated drive modes called xSnow, xSand, xGravel and xRocks and benefits from a system called xOffroad View, which uses the central display to output real-time data about clearance, quality of surface, and rolling risks. Rounding off the generous list of equipment are a towing hook and a roof rack.

The production is set to start in August, but you can already one from U.S. $81,075, destination fee included. The standard BMW X5 xDrive40i costs about $11,900 less.
