BMW X5 M, X6 M debut at last

BMW has finally revealed the performance versions of its latest-gen X5 and X6 crossovers.

Both cars come driven by the old-and-proven 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V8 engine of the BMW M5. Same as with its sedan/saloon version, it comes paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and pushes up to 600 hp (447 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque to the wheels.

This represents a 25 hp (18.6 kW) increase over the past generation and translates into faster sprinting times. Both the X5 M and the X6 M now sprint 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 3.9 seconds (previously: 4.2s). The top speed is capped at 250 km/h (155 mph) as usual, but you may opt for the M Driver’s Package for an increase to 290 km/h (180 mph).

This is not the most interesting bit, though. In their next iteration, both the X5 M and the X6 M get Competition versions with a further 25 hp (18.6 kW) and 3.8s sprint time.

The most basic trim versions ship with adaptive shock absorbers, 21-inch wheels (the Competition trim has 22-inch wheels at the rear), sports-grade brakes, an aerodynamic kit and a redesigned exhaust system. The AWD system benefits from active differential.

Inside, there are new seats, a leather-bound M steering wheel, carbon or aluminum ornamental inserts (you choose), a digital dashboard, and a 12.3-inch infotainment display.

Sales will begin in the spring of 2020.
