BMW XM photographed close up during road tests

The BMW M division celebrates turning 50 this year, and what better way to mark the milestone than by launching a new iconic vehicle into production? Well, one is coming up soon based on the XM Concept.

Despite the abundant camo, the new spy shots let us conclude that the split headlights are there to stay. BMW itself said it intended to keep up to 90 percent of the concept car’s features intact until the production. Differences so far include normal doors with visible handles and a somewhat downsized radiator grille.

The production car will be getting quad tailpipes grouped by two at each end of the  rear bumper and a new wheel set, as evidenced by the obviously fake tiny wheels the test car rides on. We also know from BMW firsthand that 23-inch wheels will be available as a paid option.

All XM models will be plug-in hybrids by design. The entry spec will produce around 650 PS (641 hp / 478 kW), and the top spec – rumored to be called XM Label – will probably venture into the 750-PS (740-hp / 552-kW) territory.
