Bugatti returns its Baby toy car into mass production

Luxury car manufacturer Bugatti has caused quite a stir at this year’s Geneva show when it first premiered an €11,000,000 La Voiture Noire hypercar and then followed up by saying it would bring the drivable toy car called Bugatti Baby back into production. Way to go, Bugatti!

Ettore Bugatti himself built the original Baby car for his younger son Rolan. The toy vehicle looked like a 1:2 replica of the Bugatti Type 35 racecar and eventually made it into series as the Bugatti Type 52, selling a total of 500 copies internationally. You can still find them at auctions sometimes priced as high as U.S. $110,000.

The resurrected Bugatti Baby II series will also consist of 500 units. The car will be much larger this time around, measuring ¾ of the size of the Type 35. This will enable the more delicately built adults to drive it aside from the children. There will be three drive modes: one capped at 20 km/h (12.4 mph), another at 45 km/h (28 mph) and the last one uncapped. You may still rest more or less easy knowing that the Baby II engine only churns out 13.6 horsepower (10 kW).

The car will be getting a steering wheel and wheels stylized after those of the classical Bugatti two-seaters, all the necessary lights, a leather-draped seat, an aluminum dashboard, a regenerative brake and a traction battery. It will also sport a silver Bugatti logo. Copies ordered in 2019 will ship with a commemorative plaque celebrating the company’s anniversary.

Prices for a new Bugatti Baby II begin at €30,000.
