The Bugatti-Rimac Joint Stake Company is not going to switch Bugatti hypercars to electric power, CEO Mate Rimac said in an interview to Automotive News Europe. He promised to make new Bugatti vehicles “exceptional” and not mere copies of the Rimac Nevera EV.
According to Rimac, the currently adopted W16 engine is an engineering marvel that established the hypercar as a thing in our world. Having said that, it is also a very old engine – nearly two decades old, in fact.
Being a big fan of electric cars, Rimac openly admits that the simplest solution would be to produce another Nevera EV and slap a Bugatti badge on it. However, the famous marque is going to need internal combustion engines for a while longer, therefore, the Molsheim HQ will have to design such an engine from scratch for its next Bugatti.
Just what of engine it is going to be remains unknown. Rimac claims all Bugatti production facilities are operating at full capacity and have three years’ worth of workload right now, so there is still time to think and consider options. The one thing that appears clear is that the new engine has to be electrified to some extent. As such, the next big Bugatti to come is shaping up to be a hybrid.
