Bugatti to recall a Chiron Super Sport due to mismatched wheels

Bugatti assisted by NHTSA has announced a recall of exactly one Chiron Super Sport hypercar. Due to an error in the online configurator, a customer managed to customize the car with a wheel set designed for a less powerful Chiron modification.

The top speed of the Super Sport version is officially rated at 380 km/h (236 mph), but switching the drivetrain to a top performance mode lets the driver to lift the electronic limiter to 440 km/h (273 mph). With 1,600 metric horsepower (1,578 hp / 1,177 kW) at its disposal, though, the hypercar needs a very specific wheel design to remain stable and safe.

One of the customers piecing together their Chiron on the manufacturer’s website somehow opted for standard Chiron wheels normally greyed out in the Super Sport list of options. The order was submitted successfully and the company delivered it, but is now facing the need to back down on it.

The Bugatti manual states that any wheels that are mismatched to the car may affect steering performance at higher accelerations and increase the likelihood of accidents, especially when driving in top-speed mode. The affected owner will have the wheels, tires and relevant sensors replaced on their car.
