Bugatti confirms that its next hypercar is a V16-packing hybrid

The Bugatti Chiron successor will be partially electric and powered by a massive V16 engine. The French marque has just confirmed that it would debut in June and posted a short video where you can hear the high-revving mill in action.

The Chiron and all of its special editions, including Bolide, Centodieci, Divo, La Voiture Noire and Mistral, use the same 8.0-liter, quad-turbo W16 engine. The company had said multiple time that it was no longer viable and needed a replacement. Mate Rimac, the CEO of the Bugatti-Rimac joint stock company, also confirmed on multiple occasions that the brand’s next hypercar would be part-electric.

All we know at this point is that Rimac will handle the electric aspect of the powertrain. Just where the company plans to source its V16 from remains unclear: Volkswagen Group has nothing of the kind in its current lineup. If we had to speculate, though, the 8.3-liter, naturally aspirated unit made by Cosworth seems like a worthy candidate.

In earlier news, we learned that Bugatti’s next car would get a completely different chassis as well. There’s nothing known about it, but we should get some more info before the June presentation. Select customers have already managed to get a sneak peek of the early prototype version of this car. Even so, the production will not begin until at least 2026. Right now, the Bugatti factory in Molsheim, France is busy piecing together Bolide and Mistral preorders, poised to become the marque’s last cars in history running on W16 power.
