Someone has just handed over $200,000 for a 35-year-old Buick GNX coupe, one out of 547 units produced in total. The car was kept in excellent condition by its only owner and only accumulated 3,700 kilometers (2,300 miles) under its belt.
The GNX debuted in the last production year of the Buick Regal, which ultimately provided its platform. The key difference was in the engine, a 3.8-liter V6 boosted to a manufacturer-rated 280 PS (276 hp / 206 kW) and 488 Nm (360 lb-ft) of torque. In reality, however, multiple measurements proved that the car was capable of more than 300 horsepower and around 570 Nm (420 lb-ft) of torque.
Other highlights of the GNX model included improved automatic transmission, a new exhaust system and a special exterior trim. Unofficial measurements agreed that it could reach 60 miles per hour (96.6 km/h) in 4.6 seconds and run the quarter-mile distance in 12.7 seconds.
Although doubtlessly high, the selling price did not break any records: another GNX with near-zero mileage fetched $275,000 at an auction last year.
