Songsan Motors, which is a part of China-based automaker BYD Group, surprised more than a few of us with the reveal of the SS Dolphin coupe and roadster last fall (watch the video for a closer look). It is now working on a sedan with similar styling cues.
In case you don’t remember, the car looked like a rather shamelessly ripped off first-generation Chevrolet Corvette with quirky proportions. The new one, which has just been leaked in pre-production patent images, takes the things even further with its bizarre sedan shape. Apparently, the design team simply shoved the front part of the cabin further to the front end, shortening the front doors and the hood, to squeeze a rear bench in. It also caused the trunk to shrink considerably. The wheelbase appears to have stayed the same.
The overall exterior styling has also not undergone any major modifications except for a few trim pieces. For instance, the original SS Dolphin had chrome-coated ‘vintage’ bumpers, while the sedan has black ones. A top-down view reveals that the roof is divided in four panels, possibly removable.
Carscoops believes the Dolphin sedan will be based on the same platform as the coupe and the roadster, as well as the mass-produced BYD Qin Pro model. As such, it will be powered by a 1.5-liter turbo engine and a single electric motor jointly rated at 315 PS (311 hp / 232 kW) and 535 Nm (395 lb-ft) of torque.
The name of the sedan and its launch date remain to be announced.
