BYD ditches ICE cars, becomes an EV-only automaker

Chinese car manufacturer BYD has confirmed that it assembled its last ICE car last month and now only has electrified and all-electric models in the production queue.

In the announcement, the company assures all ICE car buyers that they will continue to receive full warranty and maintenance support, and that there will be no shortage of spare parts for all discontinued models.

Skyrocketing popularity of battery vehicles probably played the decisive role in the company’s decision to go full-on electric. BYD sold 104,878 EVs in March alone, demonstrating a year-to-year growth of 333.1 percent. The sales in the first quarter of 2022 summed up to 286,329 units – 423% more than over the same period of 2021.

The joint enterprise of BYD and Mercedes-Benz has recently begun working on a new luxury MPV named Denza. The newcomer will be available in hybrid and all-electric versions with up to 1,000 km (621 miles) of range.
