BYD plans to invade the market of Japan with cheap Dolphin hatchback

The affordable BYD Dolphin is the Chinese marque’s second production EV released in Japan, and while it was primarily designed to compete with the Nissan Leaf, other brands may find themselves losing sales, too, Nikkei reports.

The company asks for ¥3,600,000 for the Dolphin, but state subsidies currently applied to electric vehicles in Japan automatically slash it to ¥3,000,000. The shipments will begin in October.

The first production EV from BYD in Japan was the Atto 3, which debuted in January this year and cost ¥4,400,000. The automaker was only able to sell 700 units in the first eight months. With the Dolphin coming up soon, however, the interest towards the marque may skyrocket, considering that the e-hatchback niche is still relatively empty in the country.
