China-made Tesla nemesis enters 2022MY with new looks, more range

BYD Han, an electric car said to be the main rival of the Tesla Model S in China, has received a rather thorough mid-generational refresh that brought along visual and technical updates.

The front bumper has been redesigned, the wheels sport different patterns, and the bumper and lights at the rear are new. The interior takes advantage of new trim options and materials. The front panel stays unchanged with its standard 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and 15.6-inch swiveling infotainment display.

A state-of-the-art Blade battery resides under the floor and enjoys a size increase from 76.9 to 90 kilowatt-hours. While the pre-facelift Han had 605 km (376 miles) of electric driving range, the new one has 715 km (444 miles).

There are still two main specs to choose from, but both benefit from power upgrades. The single-motor spec goes from 222 PS (219 hp / 163 kW) to 245 PS (242 hp / 180 kW). The dual-motor/AWD version trades 494 PS (487 hp / 363 kW) for 517 PS (510 hp / 380 kW). BYD quotes the same sprint times for both, with the dual-motor variant needing 3.9 seconds to zap from standstill to highway speed.

In the top trim called Genesis, the Han gets a Level 2.5 self-driving system, 5G connectivity and adaptive suspension. A new special version called Jade Green comes finished in its titular shade meant to resemble the colors of traditional Chinese ink paintings.
