The organizing committee behind the annual European Car of the Year award has published a list of seven nominees. There are two Chinese vehicles in it: BYD Seal and Volvo EX30. The absolute winner will not be announced until February 26, 2024, so let’s have a look at the short list.
The all-electric BYD Seal (see video) is available in Europe with two powertrains to choose from, rated at 313 and 530 PS (309 and 523 hp; 230 and 390 kW, respectively). Depending on the specification, the WLTP-rated driving range can vary from 520 to 570 km (323–354 miles).
Volvo is still de facto a European brand, but belongs to the Chinese Geely Group, which has taken active part in designing the EX30 SUV EV.
Rounding off the list are the BMW 5-Series, Kia EV9, Peugeot 3008, Renault Scenic, and Toyota C-HR. Note that most finalists have either hybrid or full-on electric versions on sale.
The winner will be announced at the next year’s Geneva International Motor Show. The previous round had 28 models participating, including 7 Chinese ones like the Nio ET7 and the Smart #1.
