After introducing its Ocean-M Concept at the Beijing Auto Show in April (see video), BYD has now registered its production version in the database. It’s a fairly powerful all-electric hatchback that could be called Seal X, 06GT, MINI or 05EV – the final name hasn’t been decided upon, CarNewsChina reports.
There is no avoiding the fact that the final version of the car looks very little like the one we saw at the show. It sports a much tamer front fascia inspired by other BYD Seal EVs, and lacks the original’s rear diffuser and wing. The whole body kit lacks the sporty aggression that the show car had.
Size-wise, the newcomer is 4,630 mm (180.9 in) long, 1,880 mm (73.4 in) wide and 1,490 mm (58.2 in) tall with 2,820 mm (110.2 in) of spacing between the axles. It accepts 18- and 19-inch wheels and starts with a single 218-PS (215-hp 160-kW) electric motor at the rear axle. Paying extra nets you a dual-motor version with 422 PS (416 hp / 310 kW). Regardless of the motor count, the battery pack is a BYD Blade model composed of lithium-iron-phosphate cells. The volume and range numbers are pending.
