The BYD Seal 06 is a new plug-in car named the Seal 06. It runs on the same platform and powertrain as the Qin L, utilizing the company’s latest Gen.5 hybrid system. Despite having some design and equipment differences from Qin L, it costs the same as that car – from 99,800 to 139,800 Yuan, which corresponds to $13,700–19,300.
According to Car News China, the reason the company decided to produce two nearly identical cars is that the Seal 06 represents its Ocean lineup, while the Qin L hails from the Dynasty family. Both are 4,830 mm long with 2,790 mm of wheelbase. Both rely on McPherson suspension struts at the front end and four-link suspension at the back.
Where the new Seal 06 manages to stand out is the front end design. The whole nose looks new, as do the door handles and the minor trim bits. Inside, the squared-off steering wheel and the portrait-oriented head unit once again remind those of the Qin L.
Things stay unchanged in the powertrain department as well. A 1.5-liter turbo engine rated at 101 PS (100 hp / 75 kW) and 126 Nm (93 lb-ft) of torque provides the basis with a record-high claimed heat efficiency of 46.06%.
You can pair this engine with a motor rated at 163 PS (161 hp / 120 kW) and 210 Nm (155 lb-ft) of torque or go for a beefier alternative with 218 PS (215 hp / 160 kW) and 260 Nm (192 lb-ft).
The smaller battery out of the two available options holds 10.08 kilowatt-hours of power for 80 km (50 miles) of CLTC-rated range, and the bigger one stores 15.874 kWh for 120 km (75 miles).
