BYD Seal DM-i gets renamed, goes hybrid, drops price again

BYD has unveiled a five-meter-long sedan in China named the Seal 07 DM-i. The name may sound new, but it’s actually just a refreshed Seal DM-i saloon that arrived on the market last fall and received its first facelift in winter. The second update looks bigger and improves many things while dropping the prices across the board.

The biggest technological upgrade comes in the form of the newest, fifth-gen hybrid powertrain based on a 1.5-liter turbo engine. It comes in two flavors: 101 PS (100 hp / 75 kW) and 156 PS (154 hp / 115 kW). The former gets a 218-PS (215-hp / 160-kW) electric motor, and the latter benefits from a 272-PS (268-hp / 200-kW) motor.

For the batteries, BYD offers 10.08 and 17.6 kWh options rated at 70 and 125 kilometers (43 and 77 miles), respectively. With the gas tank maxed out, you can look forward to a range of 2,000 kilometers (1,242 miles) and a fuel economy of 3.4 liters per 100 km (69 MPG).

From the styling standpoint, the Seal 07 DM-i looks nearly the same as the old version. It does benefit from added standard equipment in all trim levels, including DiPilot ADAS. There are five trims to choose among in total, priced from 139,800 to 195,800 Yuan.

The old version was announced with the pricing in the 176,800–246,800 Yuan range, but dropped to 166,800 Yuan before the sales started in September last year. In late February, the refreshed Seal DM-i Glory Edition came out that started from 149,800 Yuan. Simply put, this is the third time that BYD cuts the price on the Seal DM-i while improving its technical specs.
