General Motors plans to launch production of Cadillac-branded, premium-grade electric cars that would be able to compete with the similar Tesla, Mercedes-Benz and Audi models for customer attention.
The company’s first all-electric vehicle will be based on the BEV platform. Rumors say it will become available by 2021 and ultimately provide the technological basis for nine more Cadillac EVs ranging from a mini-SUV to an MPV.
Looking back at Cadillac’s current vehicle lineup, there are only two electrified models on offer: the ELR hybrid and the plug-in hybrid version of the CT6 luxury sedan.
On the other hand, General Motors as a whole has quite a bit of experience with all-electric cars already. For instance, there is the Chevrolet Volt, which had become available even before the Tesla Model S was announced, and the Chevrolet Bolt, which had premiered far ahead of the Model 3 launch.
