The U.S. carmaker has spent a ton of money designing its dual-turbo V8 known as the Blackwing, but its design proved suboptimal. As such, the mill was destined to become history with the discontinuation of the CT6-V sedan/saloon line – but this has been averted.
Reportedly, Manifattura Automobili Torino, a niche sports car maker headquartered in Turin, Italy, purchased the production rights for the Blackwing engine and intends to use it in its future projects. Thus far, the Italian marque is known for its resurrection of the iconic Lancia Stratos series, as well as assistance in designing the Aspark Owl hypercar.
Cadillac had originally intended to squeeze the Blackwing into its smaller-sized CT5-V sedan series, but despite its rather moderate displacement volume of 4.2 liters, the engineering team simply failed to fit the V8 under the hood of the compact car.
Speaking about the acquisition, Manifattura Automobili Torino CEO Paolo Garella said that Cadillac would not need the production rights for the engine anymore anyway, while the coachbuilder could put it to good use. He added that the company would later unveil an all-new, in-house-designed sports car with the Blackwing powertrain at its core.
