British automaker Caterham revealed that it plans to release an all-electric sports car. It also posted the first teaser image of Project V, a car unlike anything Caterham has produced so far. The full reveal will take place on July 11, 2023.
The company calls the vehicle its “new concept” and “a declaration of intent”. As such, it is probably a design study to help the traditional automaker to find its way towards evolving the brand. The Caterham we know is a manufacturer of extremely lightweight and old-fashioned premium roadsters; the new teaser shows what looks like a modern sports coupe with a sleek body and no retro cues.
Another theory that some media have voiced is that the Project V will eventually reach production, but not too soon. In this case, around two years could pass from the original concept premiere to the production car.
It is worth mentioning that Caterham hired a new design director in early May: Anthony Jannarelly of W Motors. This may explain why the company’s next car looks so unlike the rest. It may present the next evolutionary step for the conservative British brand.
Late last month, Caterham showed us another electric car concept (seen in the rest of the gallery below). That one looked nearly indistinguishable from its gas-powered predecessors and utilized a 240-PS (237-hp / 177-kW) electric motor in tandem with a 40-kW traction battery. The company emphasized back then that it was merely a concept not meant for production.
