Increasing the area of ground contact is essential in professional motorsports, but in the majority of cases, going for slightly wider tires or increasing downforce is enough. Driven Media decided to play it original and put dually wheels on a Caterham Seven.
The team simply took four extra steelies and welded them onto the ones the car had from the factory, ending up with dually wheels at all four corners around 350 mm wide. They admitted that the setup felt a bit heavy and clumsy in corners, although they never weighed the wheels prior to the installation.
Imagine their surprise when they discovered that their improvised Eighterham was, in fact, faster on the track! On their test circuit, the car made a full lap in just 31.1 seconds, half a second faster than the best it could do on a quartet of stock Avon tires.
How’s that for unconventional tuning?
