The latest attempt by Caterham to create a sports car with a fixed roof was a failure: the C120 project was shelved and production never started. However, the company still has plans for a coupe-shaped model – an all-electric one, to be specific.
The corresponding statement was made by Caterham CEO in his recent interview with Autocar. He pointed out that the EV would join the Caterham Seven (featured here) instead of replacing it. It would be more appealing and up-to-date than the company’s traditional offerings and come based on a dedicated architecture for RWD sports cars.
Having said that, the project remains to be greenlit. According to Caterham, an ideal electric two-seater should weigh in under 700 kilograms (1,500 pounds) and lend itself to the 20-15-20 track use formula. The latter means you can drive it on the track for at least 20 minutes without any performance limitations, then spend 15 minutes waiting for the pack to recharge and go in for another 20-minute drive.
If it gets approved, the EV will come based on a steel space-frame with a lightweight aluminum of carbon-fiber body. This is all Autocar was able to learn from the interview. The author of the article believes the car should reach the market before 2028.
