Caterham talks about its first all-electric sports car

British niche automaker Caterham is busy designing its first battery-powered sports car, which will be styled differently from the company’s current models, including the Seven shown in the gallery and video here.

According to Autocar.co.uk, the reveal will take place in 2023 and coincide with the automaker’s 50th birthday.

The publication was able to conduct a brief interview with Caterham Chief Designer, Anthony Jannarelly. He mostly spoke in general phrases, saying only that it is going to be a two-door electric car with a ‘clean and light’ design. He added that, while the loyal fans of the Caterham brand will warmly greet the innovation, it will also help attract new audiences.

The way he described it, the marque’s pioneering EV is shaping up to be a RWD roadster with aluminum/carbon bodywork. The company wants it to become a bridge of sorts from the classical to the contemporary. Interestingly enough, the model might become one of the world’s most lightweight battery cars in production, possibly the lightest in the sports car category. That said, we will have to wait for an official confirmation for these claims.
