Dreadnort Boats, a New Zealand-based company with specialization in marine vessel design, went for something new with what it calls the POD, or Point of Difference. It is a camping trailer with unearthly looks and a starting price of 98,000 NZD (~$64,500).
The POD comes in a variety of sizes including 5.1 x 2.5 x 2.5 meters, 7.0 x 3.1 x 2.5 m and 9.0 x 4.5 x 2.5 m. It has aluminum walls 5 mm thick and glass windows 6 mm thick. Two hatches in the roof provide the much-needed ventilation. The lightest and smallest version on sale has ceilings barely 2 meters high and weighs slightly more than one metric ton (2,200 pounds).
The furniture found inside is transformable, there is a kitchenette provided and a plethora of storage compartments and niches. The layout varies depending on the size of the trailer, but standard power sockets and USB charging ports are included in all specs. Roof-mounted solar panels deliver extra juice to the 200Ah battery on board, and you can still recharge it with a charging cord if necessary.
Rather than coming with its own bed or wheels, the POD is delivered without any means of transportation. The manufacturer recommends putting it on a trailer and parking it either on its own wheels (if present) or special supports. Depending on your needs, it can transform into a home on wheels, an office space or a kiosk. Dreadnort Boats says it will be listening to customers and implementing custom designs based on specific layout and equipment requirements.
