Check out an electric car born in 1980

The HMV FreeWay may have a motor only as strong as four average horses, but it is very unique and currently on sale with the bidding at $100 with several days remaining.

The tiny single-seater tricycle was made by High Mileage Vehicles, an obscure automaker from the United States. Dave Edmonson, the founder of the company, bet hard on maximizing the mileage of his cars during the oil crisis of the late 1970s. His other creations had engines rated between 12 and 16 horsepower and consumed between 2.5 and 3.8 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers (62–94 MPG in U.S. terms).

This example was an experimental unit running on electricity and exerting 4 horsepower. Unfortunately, the seller did not specify its range or other detailed parameters.

The structural design of the HMV FreeWay is basic at best, but still sophisticated enough to feature independent suspension and variable transmission. This particular example had only two owners throughout its life and is in need of a partial restoration to be drivable. The buyer will be getting all the documents, a folder of historic photos and a couple of spare motors with their purchase.

After assembling and selling around 700 such vehicles in 1979–1982, Edmonson ultimately went out of business as oil prices rebounded.
