This 1965 Lola T70 Spyder participated in many races and underwent comprehensive restoration prior to going on sale in Australia. The current bid is 210,000 AUD (around 146,500 USD).
Lola is a U.S. car brand founded by Ford GT40 creator Eric Broadley in the 1960s. The first generation (see video) was designed specifically for endurance racing and came equipped with Ford eight-cylinder engines, among others. The listing highlights that the example on sale was one of the few V8 cars to have taken part in actual races.
It participated in various tournaments around Europe and South Africa and even starred in the 1972 movie ‘Weekend of a Champion’ directed by actor and racing driver Steve McQueen. Unfortunately, the movie was never finished. Other famous sports professionals used to drive the open-top sports car during the filming, but it mostly served the filming crew as a camera car.
In late sixties, the Lola vanished from public sight only to re-emerge in South Africa in a half-decayed state. It is in Australia now, owned by a man who bought it 13 years ago and had it completely restored (or, more precisely, finished restoring it after someone else started the process). He consulted OEM specifications to make sure it stayed as authentic as possible.
The 4.7-liter Ford V8 had to be built from scratch using OEM parts and linked to a new four-speed manual transmission. The listing claims that the engine was only started for fine-tuning after the restoration; driving was not attempted.
