Chery’s Kaiyi ushers in another crossover SUV

Kaiyi, a sub-brand owned by Chery that came to replace its affordable Cowin badge, has introduced a new crossover SUV named the Kunlun. AutoHome reports that the petrol version will ship next month and AWD hybrids will follow in late 2022.

Coming in at 4,738 mm long, 1,968 mm wide and 1,708 mm tall, the car is comparable to the Chery Tiggo 8, but its wheelbase is 110 mm longer at 2,820 mm. It also sports a rather unusual exterior with arrow-shaped headlights, a massive radiator grille and smooth lines all around. Wheels are available in sizes up to 20 inches.

A Huawei infotainment system and a couple of large displays dominate the interior. Buyers will be able to choose between five and seven seats.

In November, the Kaiyi Kunlun will ship with a 1.6-liter engine rated at 197 PS (194 hp / 144 kW) and a 2.0-liter one churning out 254 PS (250 hp / 186 kW). Both will be linked to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Per the spec sheet, the more powerful version will spend 8.3 liters of gas per 100 kilometers on average.

Two hybrid specs will arrive in December. One will incorporate a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and an electric motor rated at 204 PS (201 hp / 150 kW) together. The other one will make use of an extra RWD motor for 367 PS (362 hp / 270 kW) total. Their all-electric ranges will amount to 120 and 180 km (75 and 112 miles), respectively.

The Kunlun will ship with an SAE Level 2 self-driving system on board that will be able to receive over-the-air updates improving its functionality in the future.
