Chevrolet Menlo battery wagon debuts in China

Chevrolet has arranged a special event in China to introduce the Menlo, its new estate/wagon model with a purely electric drivetrain.

The FNR-X Concept introduced in April 2017 (see video) provided the basis for the build. The final production car looks very similar to it, minus the obvious production-friendly optimizations, such as the more traditional door handle design or side mirrors instead of cameras.

Inside the car is a next-gen multimedia system that you can control using voice commands or a remote smartphone connection.

As for the architecture, it looks like the Menlo comes based on the Buick Velite 6 chassis, which in turn dates as far back as the Lacetti. Both wagons share the same wheelbase of 2,660 mm (8.73 ft), with the Chevy being marginally longer at 4,665 mm vs. 4,650 mm (15.31 ft. vs. 15.26 ft.).

Nothing has been said about the powertrain specs yet. Data submitted to the China Ministry of Industry says the Menlo comes powered by a single 150-hp (112-kW) electric engine mounted on the front axle. The battery capacity is not reported, but the NEDC driving range is said to be 410 kilometers (255 miles).

Sales in China will launch in the first half of 2020, and the prices are pending.
