Cruise halts Origin production after multiple incidents

Cruise, a self-driving tech company and part of General Motors, has paused the production of its Origin shuttles shortly after the authorities of California banned their use on public roads, TechCrunch reports.

The company, which has experienced multiple incidents involving pedestrians recently, commented by saying it would use this time out to restore the public trust to its autopilot tech.

Cruise has been using a modified version of the all-electric Chevrolet Bolt hatchback as an autonomous taxi in California. One of these has recently hit a woman on the road in San Francisco, an incident that got the government concerned about the safety of these cars.

With hundreds of Origin units already assembled and ready for use, Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt is confident that the company has enough for the time being. Once all investigations have passed, the production will resume at an increasing tempo.
