Tuning performance cars is a risky business because they are already operating close to their design limits, and the owner of this Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 had to learn this the hard way earlier this week.
The owner of Complete Street Performance had the American sports car tuned to a whopping 840 PS (829 hp / 618 kW). The details are scarce, but the one thing we know is that the Camaro was switched to E85 fuel. To check if everything was working correctly, he put it on the dyno, got inside and kept the pedal down for a minute straight or so.
Then the transmission housing cracked and fell apart at the rear end, followed by flamed erupting from underneath the car and the side airbags triggering. Fortunately for everyone involved, the video operator had a fire extinguisher at hand that he immediately used to douse the flames. No one was hurt.
In retrospect, the tuner admitted that losing the transmission like that was a shame, but losing it on an actual racetrack could have been much, much worse.
