Old Callaway-tuned Chevy Camaro hits the auction block

Back in the 1990s, Callaway produced a bold and radical body kit for the Chevrolet Camaro, endowing the American muscle car with a rounded nose and a bullet-like profile. One of 18 units made is heading to an auction tomorrow, where it might fetch around $50,000.

The body kit is called CamAero and replaces most of the OEM bodywork, as well as the headlights and the wheels. In addition to it, the stock 5.7-liter V8 gets stroked to 6.3 liters of displacement and boosted to 426 PS (420 hp / 310 kW), a healthy bump over the stock 279 PS (275 hp / 205 kW).

The package also included brake and transmission reinforcements. As a result, the coupe could sprint 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) in 4.7 seconds and cover a quarter of a mile in 11.3 seconds.

Needless to say, a tuning program as extensive as this one came at a high price in the nineties. With the base car starting at $18,000, you needed to put away at least $36,000 for all the modifications. It remains to be seen whether the example going on sale tomorrow has what it takes to recoup those costs.
