MetroKing concept taxis found rotting away near NYC

One might say that yellow taxis are a trademark feature of New York City, and that Checker was the most iconic name in the segment before going bankrupt in 2009, but there were others as well.

Back in the time, MetroKing toyed with the idea of creating a taxi cab out of the Chevrolet Colorado (see video) by replacing its truck bed with a cabin for six passengers. Apart from being spacious, such taxis would be well suited for wheelchair users – but the concept never took off.

Several discarded MetroKing prototypes were found discarded and rotting in a landfill in varying stage of completeness. All seem to have been brand new at the time they were experimented upon, some even containing packaged OEM parts inside. The interiors are not finished, and one car still has a showroom sticker.

As some of you have noticed, there is a completed Chevrolet S10 taxi among these as well, which looks like it could have seen some actual use. It is a pity, though, that MetroKing’s repeated attempts to invade the shark-infested waters that is the NYC taxi business ultimately failed.
