This vintage Ultra Van is a Chevy Corvair at heart

It could be hard to believe at a first glance that this motorhome for sale is 53 years old.

The 1968 Ultra Van was born on the same platform as the infamous Chevrolet Corvair – read Ralf Nader’s “Dangerous at Any Speed” if you want to know the reason for the infamy. Even so, that car model apparently donated its organs to as many as 376 Ultra Van units before 1970.

The body of the motorhome has a monocoque structure and resembles the hull of a plane more than the exterior of a bus or van. It is largely made of GFRP and aluminum. The suspension at both ends is completely independent, and a Corvair six-cylinder provides it with 141 PS (139 hp / 104 kW) of power. The automatic transmission stems from the same donor.

This particular example is up for grabs for an asking price of $17,000 USD with around 91,000 km (56,500 miles) under its belt. It is not completely stock: the paint, the headlamps and the wheels are new. The latter are 15-inch rims taken from a 1980 Chevy Corvette.

Bidding has been rather slow so far, with the best offer currently at $7,500.
