A highly intriguing set of photos surfaced on Facebook a little while ago, depicting a camouflaged C8 Corvette Z06 standing next to a Porsche 911 GT2 RS on what looks like the dreaded North Loop of the Nürburgring.
The mid-engined C8 generation of the Corvette was unveiled last summer, and Chevrolet is currently focusing on making its top-performance version called the Z06. Car spotters have already filmed a camo-wrapped Z06 out on public roads, so the launch can’t be too far away.
In turn, the original GT2 RS came out packing 700 hp (522 kW) under the hood and set a world record at the Green Hell, lapping it up in mere 6 minutes 47.3 seconds. Its contemporary – the Corvette ZR1 – only managed the same in 7 minutes 4 seconds, despite the stronger 765-hp (570-kW) engine. The Lamborghini Aventador SVJ bested both by a small margin when it came out, commanding 770 hp (574 kW) and finishing the loop in 6 mins 44.97 secs. Ultimately, the recent 911 GT2 RS MR managed to shave another couple of seconds off that score, crossing the finish line in 6 mins 40.3 secs. The important thing to note here is that the latter is not a mass-produced car yet, so its record doesn’t count as such on official terms.
Back to the photos at hand, though. What were the two supercars doing at the ‘Ring? Could Chevrolet be so bold as to want to compare its latest-and-greatest against its European arch-nemesis? In this case, even if the Z06 fails to pull ahead of the 911 GT2 RS, it should at least be able to finish the race in under seven minutes.
The new Corvette Z06 will hit the dealerships throughout the USA this summer featuring a new body kit, revised suspension and upgraded engine.
