Will Chevrolet Corvette go all-electric?

Rumors have been circulating for a while now that Chevrolet was developing a new hybrid or all-electric version of its C8 Corvette, but General Motors has refrained from comment so far. Recently, two new hints have dropped signaling that the eco-friendly sports car may be well underway to production.

Joe Biden, current presidential candidate in the USA, has recently tweeted that he loved powerful American cars, pointing out that his friends in General Motors allegedly confirmed that an all-electric Corvette was in the works. He added that the car would be able to reach 322 kilometers (200 miles) per hour. GM has neither refuted nor confirmed the tweet so far.

Another news sends us back temporarily to 2015, when GM patented the trademark “Corvette E-Ray”. Back then, most agreed that it would use the name for the EV version of its Corvette. A few days ago, GM prolonged its ownership of the trademark as it was about to expire.

Little is known about the alleged Corvette EV otherwise. Insiders claim such a project exists, but is in the early stages of development, making Biden’s claim about its top speed premature at least.

On the other hand, the hybrid spec seems much closer to production. GM will be releasing electrified versions of the Corvette Zora, named after Zachary “Zora” Arkus-Duntov, and Corvette Grand Sport. The “E-Ray” bit may actually refer to the powertrain model used, rather than the car itself.
