Rumor: Chevrolet Corvette to turn into an electric SUV

Chevrolet intends to turn the Corvette badge into a standalone brand by 2025 and produce two ‘premium’ and ‘hi-tech’ vehicles under it, including a sedan and a fully electric crossover SUV, Car&Driver reports citing anonymous sources.

Both cars may be based on a seriously upgraded version of the GM Ultium platform. The upgrades may include a high-density battery pack equipped with a modern cooling system, a rapid-charge function, and special software. Among other things, the governing software is expected to be able to control torque on all four wheels independently.

Aside from cutting-edge tech, the cars will allegedly come packed with comfort-oriented features and enjoy a certain degree of exclusivity. The latter might be achieved by artificially limiting the production run, for example. Overall, both the four-door coupe and the SUV should retain the trademark features of the C8 Corvette (in the gallery here).

While none of it is official yet, it looks like Chevrolet is tempted to follow in the tire tracks of Ford with its Mustang Mach-E SUV. Car&Driver adds that the future Corvette SUVs will boast a more upmarket status compared to the Mach-E.
