An ultra-rare Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray will cross Mecum auction block at the end of the next month. Created 57 years ago, it was one of America’s precious few rides that could slam the asphalt with 425 hp while remaining road-legal (watch the video below for a sample).
Back in the time, Chevrolet built only 66 such cars with the large gas tank option (36 gallons, or 136 liters) preinstalled. This example came powered by the company’s top-of-the-line 7.0-liter V8 engine. It was also one out of only 15 cars assembled with a four-speed manual gearbox featuring a short-throw shifter.
The car underwent a complete off-body restoration a while ago that saw all of its worn panels replaced with new OEM ones. It also received a number of technical modernizations, notably including J56 performance brakes, the robust F41 suspension, a tinted windshield and an interior lacking a heater. Once restored, it landed with an odometer redlining at 8,500 RPM and a speedometer notched until 200 mph (322 km/h).
The total mileage since the production remains unknown, but the Corvette comes with a full package of documents confirming its authenticity and the origins of its individual parts. The listing neglects to mention if the matte-white exterior with matte-black accents corresponds to the original.
