Chevrolet has shared a retrospective video offering us all a look back at the Corvettes that served as pace cars in one of North America’s most popular racing series – the Indy 500.
The release of the video was set to coincide with the introduction of yet another ‘Vette safety car. On May 28, an open-topped Z06 will hit the track at the 107th Indy 500 race to maintain the safety of all participants.
The first time a Corvette assumed this role was 45 years ago, and it has not been supervising every race every year. Still, this year marks the 20th time a Corvette fills in this role and the 7th time in a row since 2017, when it was filled by the C7 Grand Sport model.
According to Motor1, Chevrolet reached an arrangement with the Indy 500 hosting company back in the 1990s to become its exclusive pace car provides. The last time a non-Chevrolet vehicle was seen in that role was in 1996, and it was none other than the Dodge Viper GTS.
